Orthodontics for children and adolescents

Orthodontic treatment for children and adolescents not only straightens crooked teeth and optimises the functioning of the masticatory system, but also prevents the onset of tooth decay, periodontal disease and possible tooth loss. It is crucial for the health of the oral cavity. Orthodontic treatment is recommended in almost 75% of cases, or about three out of four people. There are three stages of treatment, depending on the age of the patient and the changes in the teeth:

  1. treatment in milk teeth / early treatment
  2. treatment in mixed dentition
  3. treatment in permanent dentition

  • Treatment of milk teeth (approx. after 4 years)

    Sometimes orthodontic treatment can be useful from the age of 4. Malocclusions that are detected early can often be corrected with simple measures such as silicone mouth guards or functional appliances.

  • Treatment in mixed dentition (approx. after 9 years)

    It is advisable to have a check-up performed by a specialist no later than 9 years of age, before the phase of tooth change in the posterior region occurs, and to take advantage of growth. In this way, the development of the jaw can be optimised. 


    In mixed dentition, removable resin braces are usually used. With the help of functional orthodontics we achieve a harmonisation of the jaws of young people and can influence unfavourable growth as much as possible.

  • Treatment in permanent dentition (approx. after 12 years)

    When all the permanent teeth have broken through, the growth of the jaw is usually at a more advanced stage. At this stage, it is more difficult to change the growth. The main task is to correct misaligned teeth.

  • Retention (after active treatment)

    The temporary 'mobility' of the teeth is normal as the bone rebuilds to allow the tooth to move and must slowly regain stability in the new situation. This is why it is extremely important to wear a retainer after treatment with a fixed appliance. This gives the teeth a chance to stabilise in the new position in the bone, so that the result of the treatment is permanent and provides a lifetime of pleasure.

  • Prophylaxis for young people

    Removable braces should be cleaned carefully once a day, preferably in the morning, with a hard (special) toothbrush and toothpaste. If necessary, the appliances can be cleaned with a low concentration of vinegar. During periods when the appliances are not worn, they should be stored in a suitable container.
